Jotly — Privacy Policy

Jotly is a browser extension by FrootyStudios that lets you save text snippets from the web pages you visit, organized by website. This policy explains what information Jotly handles and how it is protected.

In short: Jotly stores the text you save and your settings locally in your browser. It does not send that information to FrootyStudios, sell it, use it for advertising, or use it to build a browsing profile.

Information Jotly handles

When you explicitly save a snippet — from the in-page popup, the right-click menu, or highlight mode — Jotly saves a small record so you can find it again:

  • The text you selected
  • The URL and title of the page you saved it from
  • A timestamp
  • Organizational data you create, such as block names

These records are grouped by the site's hostname. Jotly also stores your theme preference (system, dark, or light).

Jotly does not collect, and has no access to, anything you do not explicitly save — it does not read page content in the background, track your browsing, or record which sites you visit. Chrome Web Store policy may classify page URLs and website content as user data; Jotly uses this information only to provide the note-saving features described above.

Collection, transmission, and storage

Everything above is stored locally on your device using your browser's extension storage (chrome.storage.local). It stays on your device and is never uploaded.

Jotly does not transmit this information to FrootyStudios or to any analytics, advertising, or tracking service, and keeps no external database of it. The extension makes no network requests with your data and contains no remote code.

Permissions and why they are used

  • storage — save your notes and settings locally on your device.
  • sidePanel — provide Jotly's interface in the browser's side panel.
  • contextMenus — add the right-click “Save Selected Text” action.
  • tabs — read the active tab's address and title so notes are grouped by site and labeled with their source page, and so the panel reflects the site you're on. Browsing history is not collected.
  • Access to the web pages you visit — run Jotly's capture controls on http/https pages so you can save text on them. Jotly only acts around your own text selections and only stores what you explicitly save; it sends no page data anywhere.

Jotly does not access your cookies, passwords, authentication tokens, downloads, bookmarks, or personal communications.

Third parties and remote code

Jotly contains no third-party analytics or advertising SDK and does not download or execute remote code. Its content scripts and background logic are packaged with the extension. Jotly does not integrate with any external service to operate.

Optional uninstall feedback

When you uninstall Jotly, your browser may open an optional feedback form hosted by Google Forms. You may close the page without submitting anything. If you choose to submit a response, the information you enter is provided to FrootyStudios through Google Forms and is also processed by Google under Google's applicable privacy terms. This feedback is used only to understand problems and improve Jotly, and is entirely voluntary.

Data sharing and sale

FrootyStudios does not sell Jotly user data. Jotly does not share your saved notes or settings with FrootyStudios, advertisers, data brokers, or any other third party. Voluntary uninstall feedback is handled as described above.

Data retention and deletion

Your notes and settings stay in your browser's local storage until you remove them. You are always in control:

  • Delete individual notes (with an undo option), whole blocks, or all notes for a site from the side panel or the “View all notes” page.
  • Export a site's notes to a JSON file for backup, and import them again whenever you need.
  • Uninstalling the extension removes its local storage entirely.
  • You can also clear it through your browser's extension or site-data controls.

Aside from feedback you choose to submit after uninstalling (see above), nothing is stored off your device, so there is no server-side copy of your notes or settings for FrootyStudios to hold or delete. To request deletion of feedback you voluntarily submitted, contact us at the address below.

Children's privacy

Jotly is a general-purpose browser utility and is not directed to children. FrootyStudios does not knowingly use Jotly to collect personal information from children.

Changes to this policy

If Jotly's data practices or this policy change, the updated policy will be published on this page with a new “Last updated” date. Material changes will be disclosed as required by applicable Chrome Web Store policies.
